Walmart de México y Centroamérica, the world's greenest retailer: Newsweek

  • Among the largest 500 companies in the world, it ranks no. 14, and no. 1 in Mexico

Mexico City, Oct. 24, 2011.- Walmart de México y Centroamérica is the greenest retailer in the world, according to Trucost and Sustainalytics, consultants on sustainability issues and producers of the Green Classification 2011, published by Newsweek. The classification scores environmental performance of different companies based on their worldwide environmental impact footprint -analyzing over 750 variables— in addition to policies, environmental management, and transparency in reporting.

Among the top 500 publicly-held companies in the world who participated in this evaluation, Walmart de México y Centroamérica ranked #1 among retailers, #1 in Mexico and #14 worldwide. The initiatives highlighted by the specialists in evaluating the company´s achievements were a 58% reduction in the use of plastic bags and the promotion of reusable bags; the development of renewable sources of energy –both wind and sun energy- and energy efficiency.

"This recognition reinforces our commitment to a better planet and serves as motivation to continue evaluating and implementing low environmental impact technologies and practices in our stores, clubs, restaurants, DCs and home offices, as well as among our suppliers," stated Raúl Argüelles, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Walmart de México y Centroamérica.

The company's long-term objectives in the field of sustainability include 100% use of renewable energy; generating zero discharges that pollute water sources; generating zero wastes, and offering a broad range of environment-friendly products. To achieve this, Walmart de México y Centroamérica has a 360º strategy involving associates, suppliers, customers, government, NGOs, and universities.

In the case of retail companies, the primary ones are:

  1. Walmart de México y Centroamérica (Mexico) –ranked 14th, worldwide–
  2. Marks & Spencer Group (United Kingdom) –33rd place worldwide–
  3. Staples (United States) –52nd place worldwide –

Other Mexican companies recognized with the Green Classification 2011: Femsa (349), América Móvil (422) and Grupo Bimbo (480).

Methodology

The green score for the largest 500 publicly-held companies in the world was obtained the the use of methodologies and weighing by a panel of consulted experts from Trucost and Sustainalytics. The companies were evaluated based on three factors: environmental impact score (footprint), management score (policies, initiatives, and controversies), and a communication score (transparency and disclosure).

Trucost and Sustainalytics are two of the primary environmental research firms, worldwide. Trucost specializes in quantitative measurement of environmental performance. Sustainalytics, on the other hand, is known worldwide for the credibility of its independent analysis of environmental, social and government factors.
