MALIK BIOGRAPHY

It’s not that often that an artist’s sophomore album surpasses the standard of a well received debut, but ever so often a human being that realizes their voice and musical purpose early in their career is born and luckily for South Africa Malik is one of those wonders of the music world. Malik was always destined for great things musically which was evident when, after he qualified as a bio-technician and worked for only 2 months, he managed to make the top 1% of the popstars talent search competition. This started him on a journey that led him to record his debut album, I’m Free with one of South Africa’s foremost producer Kyllex of Yizo Yizo fame. The lead single on Kyllex’s hugely popular Jemza house beats Vol.1 featured Malik’s enigmatic voice which catapulted him into the public ear. After having released his debut album, which was mostly produced by his fellow Daveyton native Kyllex, he worked with some of the countries top artists like Zola and Tuks which helped solidify his position as a respected vocalist. His follow up album Bekezela is poised to further establish him not just as a top class singer but a high caliber entertainer with a visionaries approach to music. With the help of Producers like 37mph (Ishmael, Gumshev, Zubz), Bongz (Jozi, Gumshev) Ishmiza (Ishmael, Morafe) and Amu (Mr. Selwyn, Wikid), Malik has created a collectors item which draws from his influences ranging from Maxwell, R Kelly and Bob Marley to as far a field as Miriam Makeba and Bilal. With a healthy mix of Ballads like Nom’ungahamb’uzobuya and Sithandwa sam’, club floor fillers like Akekho’munye and Nami Ngyaz’funa as well as inspirational pieces like the title track to the album Bekezela and Indoda, this album will be appreciated long after this young man has left the music scene and will mark the beginning of a brand of South African soulful R&B that will have many people exclaiming “where did he come from”. A good example of the young mans versatility is the Kizomba inspired Tsonga love song Nkari imali which features the voice of the first Tsonga MC M’changani which is testament to Malik’s visionary approach to his music. Bekezela is the album that will be hailed as Malik declaring how serious he is about his music, youthfully mature and a welcome breath of fresh air is how to best describe this peek into the soul of music.
