Obama's Cairo Speech: "Any Nation-Including Iran"--Right to Peaceful Nuclear Power Under NPT Treaty

(6/04/09) President Barack Obama comments on allowing peaceful nuclear energy development in any country, including Iran, if the "responsibilities" of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) are complied with.

This is a highly naive, potentially dangerous and unrealistic proposal considering the experience with countries like Iran and North Korea that have a long and checkered history when it comes to inspection of their "peaceful" nuclear related facilities:

(North Korea): http://www.isis-online.org/publicatio...

(Side note: does "any nation" include the USA? Can the number of nuclear power plants in the U.S. finally be expanded to meet its own energy needs?)

Obama: "No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons. That is why I strongly reaffirmed America's commitment to seek a world in which no nations hold nuclear weapons. And any nation - including Iran - should have the right to access peaceful nuclear power if it complies with its responsibilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. That commitment is at the core of the Treaty, and it must be kept for all who fully abide by it." (1:28)

É muito fácil pregar o desarmamento, quando uns têm a bomba e os outros, não!
Coitados dos que não têm!
Jamais merecerão respeito.
Ao menor cheiro de crise, ouvirão:
se cuide; tenho a bomba e você, não!

so far I believe that Obama shows the stark difference between the previous admin. and how it will successfully deal with the middle east. He has not moved his position on interfering early with the Iranian election, that shows strength not foolishness. If McCain was president he would have dealt in an unstable manner based off of his recent comments, that would further the chaos...you will see, it was the right the move.

Real,
"That's none of our business!!!"
It becomes our business when the leader has publicly threatened our ally (Israel), and declared that he wants to remove them from the map.

Ok thing is, since when is Muslim synonymous with the word "terrorist" ?

While I agree with your concern towards Iran please remember that the US and Russia have more Nukes than the rest of the world combined. Where's the concern about Russia? For decades people in US and Russia thought the other side was going to bomb them. Never happened... beyond all that Iran doesn't have the technology to create a nuclear weapon.

I believe the Russian leadership was much more prudent than the the radical nutcase ruling Iran. Irans goal is to gain the technology to develop a nuke weapon For Israel or the U.S.

no concern about russia since it became stable, was massive worries before hand with spies and counter spies. Russia was packed up in a corner and didnt have a working ICBM till the 90s (when the USSR had been gone) before that it was all bs talk(why do you think the cuban missle crisis happened).

Iran could easily get hold of the ability to use a short range nuclear weapon, all it wants to do is hit israel really, its obviously wanting too, read my other post for an easy look at it
