Four Barrel is no Philz in my opinion but it's definitely a close second. The coffee here is delicious and STRONG; it's not for wussy coffee drinkers, that's for sure. I ordered the cappuccino and it was so rich I had to request a latte instead which, BTW, they were great about and didn't charge me the extra $.50.

Things I'd like to see here in the future:

1) More seating - this is a really large building and when you walk in there's a lot of space that isn't utilized. I think they could have been a lot more efficient with how they designed things.

2) More food - They only have one small pastry case and most of it is just donuts and croissants. They were delicious but it's rare that when I go and get coffee on the weekends that I don't get food too and I like to see a little more variety.

3) Cash only...really? It's time to step in to the 21st century.

That's all.

Fixies?  Check.
"Jeggings" on men?  Check.
Subtly pretentious menu with only 6 options?  Double check.  (tea drinkers are shunned up in this piece).

But, that said, a really beautifully industrial-chic (yes, I know) space w/ pretty decent coffee that is almost sweet in flavor and quite nicely subtle.  $2/cup w/ $1 refills.  If you're in the hood and want to compliment your people watching with caffeine, it's not a bad place to end up.  Given the bustling-ness, I'm not the only one who appears to think this way.

Enjoyed a satisfying hot cup of delicious cappuccino at Four Barrel Coffee. Awesome aroma. Intense flavor. Rich. Decadent. Luscious. Paired it with toffee and white chocolate cookies from Anthony's. THIS IS THE LIFE!

I don't claim to be a coffee connoisseur by any means, but damn this is great coffee!

I rarely drink coffee anywhere, and even when I do, I always need to add sugar/cream to it.. that was, until I found Four Barrel. My cup of coffee (equipped with it's cute little foam art) needed no extra additions from me. This is how I KNOW that THIS is good coffee. The little cup of goodness has sooo much flavor.. I never really understood the whole depth/layers of coffee beans thing.. but now I do. Now, I'm a believer.. and a coffee drinker!!

Great place. A must stop, every time I'm in the Mission.

p.s. this joint gets packed.. but its so big and open, you won't feel the least bit claustrophobic.

I used to not be a coffee snob, but with all the really great cafés around San Francisco, I'm slowly but surely turning into one.    I blame Blue Bottle, Philz, and Four Barrel (all of which are quite different) for ruining me.

I deliberately avoided Four Barrel for months, because it always struck me as a little TOO hip.  Walking by, I'd stare in at the masses of people, all of them hipper than me, and I figured I would feel like a completely unfashionable loser going in there.

But eventually, I sucked it up and walked in.  Yes, the crowd is exactly what I thought it was, but it's worth braving them for the delicious coffee.   I've had a variety of espresso drinks, as well as straight-up coffee, and all of them were perfect.

The décor is great - stark design with just enough warm elements to make it feel comfortable.   The boars' heads on the wall are a little weird, partially because they're boars' heads, and partially because the OCD part of me wants them to be arranged by size--smallest to largest, of course.   Okay, that's not really a complaint. Just a comment. :o)

Maybe this is a little nitpicky, but the only time I got a little irritated with the Four Barrel folks was when my husband ordered a coffee, and I ordered an Americano.  His was poured right away, while my order went into the long cue.   He ended up being nearly done with his coffee before I got my drink.

Pros:  Amazing coffee, cool atmosphere, nice baristas.  Did I mention AMAZING coffee?
Cons:   Long lines, not welcoming for the self-conscious & fashion-challenged, no comfy seats -- mostly just tables for two.

Okay, I like coffee a lot. But I el oh vee ee Four Barrels.

The staff are ALL nice. How often does that happen in The Mission?

I love the location (next to my gym...Valencia St. Muscle and Fitness) and easy to get to on a bike (or BART). And I love the space. The tables are these behemoth chunks of rough polished wood that don't rock or move at all...which is so nice. Huge windows and a nice open space with a few cozy spots.

I also love the coffee here. Prices are good and who can argue with $1 refills? But let me tell you about their decaf. Decaf, you say? Yes, their decaf is heavenly. I usually opt for the decaf americano and it does not disappoint, ever. It's like a cup of creamy smooth goodness. It's kind of like drinking a cup of dark, dark caramel.

Did I mention they don't have Internet?  Thank you! It fosters an environment where people actally talk to one another instead of basking in the glow of their iBook.

It can look hectic on weekends but the wait is never long.  I prefer weekdays to have a casual cup of joe or informal meeting, though.

I try to come here as often as possible...
Great Coffee and great beans to take home and pretend that your living room is as cool as Four Barrel (it isn't).
The Maple Bacon Donuts are ridiculous, they may kill me but they are worth it.
But more than anything - they have the golden coffee and a great place to hang out, read a book and drink coffee... what else does one need?

Their espresso drinks are amazing.  The crema is like 1/4 of an inch thick and there are absolutely no air bubbles in the steamed milk.  It's pretty much the perfect cup of espresso.

Also, the decor is fantastic.  Everything looks industrial (read: dark and sexy), and there are dead animal heads on the walls that keep the preachy vegans at bay.

But the REAL reason I go is to get waited on by the most beautiful barista/viking that I have ever seen.  Is there anything better than a 6 foot 2 red-bearded man, silhouetted against wall-mounted boar heads and serving me amazing coffee?  I don't think so.

Great coffee!  I mean Really Great Coffee!  I am so glad this place is here!  I drink Four Barrel every morning at home.  And on weekends I bike here to enjoy a cup or two in-house and watch the "hipsters" troll through on their fixed gears.

The doughnut delivery girl is fun to watched to, not for the "hot" factor so much as that she delivers the doughnuts by bike.

Come and see the staff make and grind the coffee!  Enjoy delicious doughnuts and other tasty treats!

I can't tell you how strong the coffee is at Four Barrel, because I got a decaf latte, but it tasted great, and the ambiance of the place is pretty awesome. The space is so large that I kinda wished they had expanded to the back or had more tables and chairs to accommodate the large influx of customers during weekend afternoons. But maybe they just want to maintain that spacious feel and not crowd the privileged few lucky ones that scored a table. The thick slab of wood of the tables is very attractive and rustic. The chairs are extremely uncomfortable, which might be good to deter people from staying for too long.

I like how the service seems very efficient and fast, despite a long line. And they provide a pitcher of water for self-service, which is great, because let's face it, coffee can't quench your thirst ever. If anything, coffee + long conversations with a good friend = one thirsty customer.

Just finished off my coffee and vanilla bean donut. They were both delicious and I will definitely be back. I love the industrial space at Four Barrell. Its so wide open that there's not really any bumping into people that commonly stagger around like zombies waiting for their coffee. The barista who made a cappuccino for my girlfriend also capped it with a nice milky heart.

They also have a bunch of different beans that you can pick-up for brewing at home. I saw at least 3 people stocking up this morning, which looks pretty funny when you see someone with 3-6 bags at ~$12 a bag. Regardless, its pretty clear why they might crave these beans. The coffee really is just that good.

The house coffee was not out of this world.  I would not order it again.  It tasted a little watery and acidic.  Blue bottle is better.  I might have to go  back and give it another chance and order a latte.  The interior design is cool...wood beams and lots of natural light.

Only two observations:

1) Is it really hard to smile and personable while pouring the hot water over the deliciously aromatic ground coffee that will be touching my soft lips in a matter of minutes?

2) Do POC (People of Color) not like coffee?  You wouldn't think so by the hired staff here.

Overall, great tasting coffee... but I left wondering how an establishment in the Mission can be so non-representative of the neighborhood.  Oh wait... I guess Viking deities are becoming the majority.

If I do go back, it'll be with my brown posse in tow.  trust.

My favorite coffee spot on the City by far. Great fucking lattes. The minimalism of the interior is refreshing, and to all the people griping about the lack of places to plug in their laptops, it's not that kind of joint. Get in, get out, get on with your day. Or, stop in for a few , drink your drink and get out. Simple. On site roasting gets bonus points. They play records from the decent collection they have going. Great staff, they always get a tip from me, even for a straight cup of coffee. ACES.

New Years Eve in the city. Gorgeous weather. Time to kill. Easy parking. Wish we had fed the meter more quarters so we could have hung out longer. Even my 9 month old was having a blast people watching and banging my coffee cup lid on the table.

We will be doing this family outing again - SOON! Maybe later in the day next time so we can slink into Little Star for an early dinner or take out before heading back over to the East Bay.

USE THE RESTROOM AND CHECK OUT THE JUNGLE FLOOR

that could be a solid review on its own, but in order to be most helpful, i am going to include that...
if one has not been to Uncle Randolph's hunting den in recent years and misses the boar heads, then a visit to Four Barrel is in order.
sit at the bar in the back where you can watch Johny plaid shirt with PF Fliers bag and stamp your beans (oooh, does that turn anyone else on?)
it's also pretty charming how closely you get to sit to other folks at those plank tables in front.
kiss me, four barrel, and be kind to my heart.
goddam, i get carried away with these reviews... they're addicting

I think my chest has more hair because of Four Barrel.

I actually *like* that there are no plugs and no wi-fi here.  It's so retro, having a coffee shop filled with people talking and reading rather than a bunch of eRefugees plugged in and glowing radioactively.

The soy cappuccino is a revelation.  The espresso and the soy pair beautifully, the foam is perfect, and every cappuccino I've gotten has had a feather or fern on top. Every time I walk around the neighborhood drinking one, strangers say hello--I think it's because I look so at peace with the universe and they're hoping my improved mental state will rub off on them.  The soy cappuccino just puts me in a good place.

Also, the baristas are nice.

The interior is less than conducive to, like, hanging out with a cup of coffee.  I ran into a friend there once and she looked around and commented, "Wow, this place was definitely designed by a man."  It's angular and there are Javelinas on the wall.  It's beautiful but in sort of a brutal way--though there is a lovely view from the rear window of the place.

i had been there several time. it becomes one of my favorite placece for coffee. i would go there everyday if i live around this awesome place. i heard about a guy  who's owner of the place first. i should remember his name and let you guys know about him. Unfortunately, i am not good at remembering names. You will see, have and feel coffee here. What i mean by that is....you will realize when you get there. i will tell you a little. When you walk into cafe, you can taste their coffee with your eye. Your mouth will be full of  coffee that make you special and you can feel it with your whole body.

i know my review is pretty abstract so it is not really helpful for you guys. "Coffee is abstact," to me. it is not formed . it can be totally different by you.

Enjoy! If you want to feel the same way..

I share this poem from one of my favorite poets.

A Miracle for Breakfast

At six o'clock we were waiting for coffee,
waiting for coffee and the charitable crumb
that was going to be served from a certain balcony
--like kings of old, or like a miracle.
It was still dark. One foot of the sun
steadied itself on a long ripple in the river.

The first ferry of the day had just crossed the river.
It was so cold we hoped that the coffee
would be very hot, seeing that the sun
was not going to warm us; and that the crumb
would be a loaf each, buttered, by a miracle.
At seven a man stepped out on the balcony.

He stood for a minute alone on the balcony
looking over our heads toward the river.
A servant handed him the makings of a miracle,
consisting of one lone cup of coffee
and one roll, which he proceeded to crumb,
his head, so to speak, in the clouds--along with the sun.

Was the man crazy? What under the sun
was he trying to do, up there on his balcony!
Each man received one rather hard crumb,
which some flicked scornfully into the river,
and, in a cup, one drop of the coffee.
Some of us stood around, waiting for the miracle.

I can tell what I saw next; it was not a miracle.
A beautiful villa stood in the sun
and from its doors came the smell of hot coffee.
In front, a baroque white plaster balcony
added by birds, who nest along the river,
--I saw it with one eye close to the crumb--

and galleries and marble chambers. My crumb
my mansion, made for me by a miracle,
through ages, by insects, birds, and the river
working the stone. Every day, in the sun,
at breakfast time I sit on my balcony
with my feet up, and drink gallons of coffee.

We licked up the crumb and swallowed the coffee.
A window across the river caught the sun
as if the miracle were working, on the wrong balcony.

___
PS- This miraculous coffee caught me by surprise. Bright and Lively. Drank on a summer sandy beach or on a cold drizzling rainy night- its flavors embrace like a long missed friend.

Using my experiences with Blue Bottle as a comparison in this hipster coffee area...

I have a big hate on Blue Bottle. I do like Four Barrel quite a bit!

Unlike BB, 4B has a staff with some personality and smiles, the coffee has really impressed me as being superior, and he space is great to hang out in. Oh, and they have Donuts! Fuck yeah!

A couple weekends ago I dropped my GF off at work in the morning and before heading back to Alameda to sleep the rest of the Saturday morning away I decided to grab some food and coffee... but where? where?...

Four Barrel was easy to park near and was close to the freeway entrance, so cool. Standing in line I had a few minutes to consider the strong display of current mission hipster cliches surrounding me. Fixie bikes, massive beards, chicks wearing all 256 colors in one outfit... I was truly impressed at the point-perfect hipster specimens. I wasn't hating on them, it was too early in the morning for that, but I was well amused. I though, "how cute, these little sheep, these slaves to the current trends. They must be so happy to think they are on some 'next shit' individuality, when really they are all copies of the same master hipster." I thought to myself, I'm glad I don't bow to every cool new thing I see or hear about, that I don't have to buy a new pair of shoes each season or throw out the music I listened to last year.

So then it was my time to step up to the counter. I ordered my two donuts and a coffee and slapped down my $8. I then sat down at a table and, still amused by the trendies, I pulled out my iPhone, and was surprised to have caught a strong 3G signal from AT&T. I brought up the Facebook app and updated my status...

Sure, Blue Bottle is nice and Philz is also very good but this is quite simply the best coffee I have ever had in my life, by a LONG SHOT.

Strangely enough my first exposure to Four Barrel was not in SF but in a great little coffee joint called Red Rock down in Mountain View.  Their coffee has always been excellent but starting in January this year I noticed that they were brewing lots of new stuff and it was all noticeably even more delicious than before.  I asked the barista what was up and he informed me that they are now serving Four Barrel exclusively.

Of course I'd heard great things about this coffee on Yelp and elsewhere but I thought it was very cool that my first exposure to it was essentially a "blind" test, for me it just confirms the fact that Four Barrel really is a cut above the rest and that my taste for it was not merely due to any pre-conceived notions brought about by all the rave reviews.

The only drawback is that they've practically spoiled me for anything else!

PS- Contrary to popular opinion I think it's great that these guys don't feel the need to cater to the lap-top crowd, it's a really gutsy "old-school" move and besides, there are plenty of other places for those people to go.

Life, today, is a lot like a Four Barrel cappuccino; The bitterness of the coffee offset by the naturally light-sweetness of the frothy, steamed milk reminds me that the roughest edges can be smoothed over with just a little TLC and good dairy.

Four Barrel Coffee makes a great cappuccino. For $3, it's not something I want to be shelling out for every day... but, like Mom always said, you get what you pay for. The quality brew makes the trek into the Mission on a weekday morning almost as uplifting as the company I like to keep.

Another life lesson might also be learned at the pastry shelf at the ordering counter: A vanilla donut ($2.5) reminds us that sugar and spice make everything nice, but vanilla icing makes it even better.

A little on the macabre side, adorning the wall  are the heads of 4 gents who must have lost their way on Folsom street, many years ago. Busts, as it were. Not sure what they had to do with coffee, but they'll help you find subject matter if you need a conversation kickstarter.

Sit and stay a while in the spartan interior. Sip your drink, don't gulp. And as the sun climbs, and your energy level is artificially augmented, remember that you are in one of the best cities on the planet and you're about to make life happen.

I saw this place a few nights ago, and it looked pretty cool.  But, I wasn't about to have coffee an hour before I was going to bed.  I go decaf sometimes, but if I'm going to rate a place based on their coffee, I wanted the real stuff.

So, a bright sunny Christmas Eve day, about an hour after my caffeine withdrawals were kicking in, I got a chance to try it.  It's thick coffee.  A tiny bit of fine 'dirt' left at the bottom.  It's a very fine line between strong coffee, and drinking grounds.  This was right there.

I like the minimalist decor - kind of a reminder that they serve coffee here, not hipster vibe.

Really great.  The best of the "new generation" outfits in SF.  Espresso isn't bitter (unlike Ritual and Four Barrel who seem to confuse strong with bitter).  Relaxed place to sit, excellent space.  Still uber-trendy, but not as obnoxious as Ritualor as rude as Four Barrel.

This place is spectacular.  Architecturally, the industrial-style space gives the interior a nicely open atmosphere.  I don't really like the chairs - they're too shallow, but the coffee is generally great and the entire place is a step up from down-the-street Ritual's slacker vibe.

A classic cup of iced coffee with no bells and whistles is not only cheap here, but also delightful and perfect. You can't walk out of this place without a smile on your face. Staff can be a bit pretentious at times, but it is a hipster joint in a hipster neighborhood, so what do you really expect? It's legions better than Ritual Roasters. And have to tried the maple bacon doughnut? Come on...it's great. Get some Wi-Fi and plugs here and I'd hang out all day.

I like the place, the staff is friendly, but it is definitely overrated.

$1.00 for a refill?  You're kidding, right?  It's good coffee but, NO, it is not  as good as Blue Bottle.  Let me repeat that.  A DOLLAR per refill.

Love the wild boars!

If I am in the neighborhood and I need a Dynamo donut, this place is fine. Otherwise, the blue bottle drip at Mission Beach is infinitely better, and there are donuts and wireless at Coffee Bar.

Definitely check this place out at least once though.

I have mixed feelings about Four Barrel.

Pros:
1. The coffee is good and carefully made.
2. The decor is homey, comfortable and suits the location.
3. The record player is a nice throwback, and it's great seeing the stacks of records behind the counter.

Cons (and these are biggies for me):
1. No wi-fi or power outlets (Is it too much to plug in my low-battery-life computer and do a little writing while I sip my latte? After all, what good is mind stimulating coffee and urban space if I can't use it to get something on the page, or screen?). (Minus 1.5 stars).
2. The record player (I like the kitsch factor, but ultimately it is inefficient when a record side ends every 15 minutes and the ambiance is ruined by the ensuing minutes of silence until the barista has time to flip it over. Not to mention it also creates a back-up in drink creation). (Minus .5 star).

All-in-all, I'd stop by for a coffee, but wouldn't plan to spend any extended time at Four Barrel (Which might be their entire intent).

This is my favorite coffee shop in the bay area, and we have lots: ritual coffee, blue bottle, cole. their espresso is perfect--bold yet smooth. the baristas are (generally) friendly and i've only had someone make me a subpar cappucinno once (espresso was kind of sour). but given that i've probably been there twice a week for the past year i would say that is about as good as it gets.
Decor is beautiful. Boar heads are something interesting to stare at while waiting for your drink/company/ etc. i like the roasting equipment in the back.
Only thing that gets me about Four Barrel is the seating. The chairs are awkward and the screws in them snag and tear my tights.

I went in here for a quick cup of coffee, and if you are a coffee drinker; then you will find that this little jem has fantastic french presses' and their very eco-friendly. I really like that. This place is hipster, granted I was the only Asian girl sitting there, it was okay; they have cool decor -- and they're hella busy. I went in at 4PM and damn they were packed. Also, their drinks are only one size. Which is also, very cool. I really like how it's super chill & very simple; not starbucky or even close to Peet's. This is straight up, great coffee with a hipster edge. I'm coming back.
