No matter what you’re looking for: a break full of golfing, swimming and hiking, or a quiet escape to unwind, you can find it at Moonlight Head’s six boutique cottages. Even better, not only is Moonlight Head the ultimate luxury escape, it’s eco-luxury. The cutting edge design (created by an award winning architect no less) is aimed to give you everything you need in the most sustainable way. How clever.
Located by the world famous Great Ocean Road, which runs along the stunning coastline of South East Australia, Moonlight head is just a two hour drive from Melbourne. From private helicopter tours, whale watching and hiring classic motorbikes or cars, to lounging on Wreck Beach (think shipwrecks sticking out of the sea) for some time in the sun, we’re pretty confident you’ll find activities you like here.
Moonlight head is split into six modern lodges with four bedrooms and two bathrooms in each. They’re perfect for groups or families as each building feels like a home away from home with a cosy family room and a great formal kitchen-living area. The lodge really feels like your own space, instead of another standard hotel room in a corridor of identical doors.
We love the enormous windows that offer the perfect view over the ocean, and at night, check out the stars through the huge skylights. Even better: use the handcrafted telescope for a close up of your favourite constellation. Perfect.
All these windows and the size of the rooms give them a really light, airy feel, but the great European furnishings add the just the right amount of cosy comfort. Sink into the leather furniture, snooze in bed with amazing feather down duvets, or feel antique Persian rugs under your toes.
why we like it
We love ‘green’ hotels, and Moonlight Head certainly fits the bill. Pritzker award-winning architect Glenn Murcutt and wife Wendy Lewing designed the whole property, and they put thought into every little detail. One of our favourite touches is the shape of the ceilings: they pull heat away from the rooms, leaving you feeling cool and comfortable without having to overuse the air conditioning. Pretty smart if you ask us. Breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, a private lodge that’s elegantly designed with full-on amenities, and it’s green. Doesn’t get much better on the Great Ocean Road.
what others say
The Financial Times called it the benchmark of sustainable tourism, Conde Naste Traveller honoured it for its place on the cliffs of the Great Ocean Road and Harpers Bazaar defined it as a minimalist masterpiece. We could go on, but we think the best way to find out what makes everyone love Moonlight Head is to experience it yourself.
